Dwell Time
Dwell time is the amount of time a searcher spends on a page after clicking a search result before returning to the SERP. It's a theorized quality signal — and its inverse, rapid pogo-sticking back to search results, is considered a soft negative ranking factor.
Dwell time is not officially confirmed as a ranking factor by Google, but it's a logical proxy for whether content satisfied searcher intent. If someone clicks your result, reads for four minutes, then closes the browser, that's a different signal than someone who clicks, scans for five seconds, and hits back to try the next result — the "pogo-stick" pattern that most SEO practitioners believe Google interprets negatively.
Dwell time is distinct from time-on-page. Time-on-page is measured by your analytics platform — GA4 tracks session duration based on event timing. Dwell time is what Google measures on its end: the interval between a searcher clicking your result and returning to the SERP. You can't directly measure dwell time in your analytics, only infer it from session duration and scroll data as proxies.
The pogo-stick pattern — click, immediate back, click a different result — is the clearest negative signal. It tells Google your page didn't satisfy the query for this searcher. Pages that trigger high rates of this behavior tend to rank lower over time, even if they initially held a strong position based on their link profile and content signals.
For content teams, the practical frame is designing for depth and immediate value. A strong introduction that rewards the click, structured answers that appear early in the content, and clear headings that help scanners find what they came for — all of these reduce pogo-sticking by making the page worth staying on. Long-form content earns dwell time when it delivers on its title's promise quickly, not when it buries the answer in the fifth paragraph.
